Album Art

Tools Used:

Illustrator, Photoshop, Lightroom, Lighting and Photography.

The goal for this project was to explore computer applications and techniques to create a range of album covers inspired by thre tracks from a classic album. The idea being, what if another track had been chosen as the album title? What would the new cover look like?

I chose Elton John’s “Madman Across the Water“, and during my exploration I began to look at drawing Platonic Solids in Illustrator. While doing so I began thinknig about how these drawing methods were thousands of years old, yet might be considered as a sign of madness or witchcraft during the Middle Ages. I suppose “madness” is all about perspective. I decided to keep an element of geometry running throughout the designs as a way of linking them all together.

The exploration of geometry lead me to look at Geometric Islamic Design, and other types of repeating patterns which feature in some of my later work.

Rather than explain the choices and meanings behind the design decisions for each piece, I strongly encourage you to listen to the album while looking at the corresponding design the way that people used to look at the album art adorning their LPs, and see if you can find the reasons behind the art.
